Isoctyl alcohol, also known as 2-ethylhexyl alcohol, commonly known as octyl alcohol, is a colorless flammable liquid with a special smell, soluble in water and most organic solvents. It is mainly used in the production of phthalate plasticizers such as dioctyl phthalate, etc. It is also used in defoamer, dispersant, concentration agent and petroleum filler.
The preparation of isooctanol mainly includes acetaldehyde condensation and carbonyl synthesis. Acetaldehyde condensation process is the main raw material of acetaldehyde, through condensation, hydrogenation reaction to produce isooctanol. The process of carbonyl synthesis is based on propylene as the main raw material, adding syngas through carbonyl synthesis, condensation, hydrogenation and other reactions to produce isoctyl alcohol.

Octyl alcohol as an important chemical raw material, its downstream mainly has dioctyl phthalate (DOP), dioctyl terephthalate (DOTP) and other plasticizer industry, octyl acrylate and other adhesives industry, and other special plasticizer industry. Among them, the plasticizer industry is the largest downstream of octanol, accounting for about 80% of the total demand for octanol.

Dioctyl phthalate (DOP) is prepared by octyl alcohol and phthalic anhydride through esterification and other reactions, mainly used in the processing of PVC grease, can also be used in the processing of acetic acid resin, ABS resin and rubber and other polymers, DOP plasticized PVC can be used in the manufacture of artificial leather, rolled film, cable and so on.

Dioctyl terephthalate (DOTP) is a widely used plasticizer prepared by esterification of octyl alcohol and PTA. It can be used in the production of artificial leather film, as well as in the plasticization of acrylonitrile derivatives, polyvinyl butyraldehyde and rubber.

Octyl acrylate is prepared by the esterification reaction of acrylic acid and octyl alcohol, which is mainly used in the production of adhesives, plastic modifiers, paper making and leather processing AIDS.

Other special plasticizers such as isooctyl adipate, trioctyl trimellate, etc., are not the largest downstream products of octanol, but their production and dosage are relatively stable, and they also occupy a more important position in the octanol industry chain.
