The fire department said that after receiving a report of a fire inside the plant, it scrambled to put out the fire and issued first to third alarm orders at 10:17 p.m., 10:34 p.m., and 2:10 a.m. (local time), respectively.
When a three-alarm fire response order is issued, firefighters and firefighting equipment from local government fire headquarters and neighboring areas can be mobilized, the report said. Currently, 103 units of equipment and 431 firefighters have been deployed to the scene, and Ulsan City has requested large-capacity fire cannons.
The fire is believed to have started at the tire curing plant of Hankook Tire No. 2 in Daejeon and spread to the logistics area and the raw material plant. It was confirmed that the logistics area kept hundreds of thousands of tire products, and the second factory has been burned down.
The fire department also cut off the connection between the second plant and a plant to the south to prevent further spread of the fire. The fire department said it would take some time to contain the fire because the factory is a composite panel structure with a large amount of combustible materials.
Meanwhile, the smell of burning tires spread to neighboring communities as fire and smoke spread with strong winds, and residents who were worried about harmful gas entering their homes fled for shelter.
The fire department plans to conduct an investigation into the cause of the fire and the scale of the damage as soon as the fire is brought under control.
