Dimethyl carbonate, referred to as DMC, was listed as non-toxic products in Europe in 1992, is a low-toxicity, excellent environmental performance, widely used chemical raw materials. Dimethyl carbonate can be used to make lithium battery electrolyte, can replace phosgene as carbonylation agent, can also replace dimethyl sulfate as methylation agent, and even because dimethyl carbonate has high oxygen content (molecular oxygen content of up to 53%), excellent octane number enhancement, no phase separation, low toxicity and rapid biodegradation properties, etc. It can be one of the most potential gasoline additives to replace MTBE. At the same time, dimethyl carbonate is also an important green solvent, which can be used instead of many solvents.
Compared with some common solvents, dimethyl carbonate has excellent solubility, low toxicity, and has the characteristics of high flash point, low steam pressure and high lower explosive limit in air. It is a green solvent that integrates cleanliness and safety. The most important thing is that dimethyl carbonate has good compatibility with other organic solvents (can be mixed with alcohol, ketone, ester and almost all organic solvents in any proportion, slightly soluble in water), and can be used to replace a variety of solvents. For example, it can be used with propyl carbonate to replace xylene, butyl acetate, and 100 solvent oil. It can also be used as a carbon dioxide carrier for spray cans.
