PBAT is a copolyester of terephthalic acid (PTA), adipic acid (AA) and 1, 4-butanediol (BDO), which can be widely used in packaging materials, catering utensils, sanitary products, plastic mulch disposable products, biomedicine and other fields.


However, PBAT has shortcomings in mechanical properties, thermal properties, barrier properties and production costs, so a series of modifications should be carried out to expand its application range. The development of low-cost PBAT composite materials with excellent comprehensive performance, good degradation and durability is also the main direction of scientific research and innovation in the current industry.


Improving the mechanical properties of PBAT
1. Cellulose nanocrystals can improve the mechanical properties and thermal stability of PBAT.
2. Thermoplastic starch filling can significantly improve the tensile strength of PBAT.
3, calcium carbonate filling, can promote PBAT crystallization.
4, lignin and PBAT blend, showing ideal tensile properties, the cost can be significantly reduced.

Second, improve PBAT barrier performance
 
1. PBAT and PPC were blended and extruded to make a composite film. The test found that PBAT/PPC film had high tensile strength and tear strength.
 
2. The inclusion of clay nanoparticles in PBAT matrix significantly improves the overall thermal stability and barrier effect compared with the inclusion of pure PBAT nano-clay.
 
3. Polyurethane prepolymer (PUP) is modified with starch to improve its compatibility, crystallinity, hydrophobicity and mechanical properties.
