White, slightly-green or cyan powder, relative density 2.92; melting point 474 °C.
Soluble in ammonia water, sodium cyanide solution and concentrated hydrochloric acid; insoluble in water and cold dilute acid. Decomposes in boiling dilute hydrochloric acid to cuprous chloride and hydrogen cyanide. Violent reaction may occur with nitrates, nitrites and chlorates, with explosion hazard. Toxic hydrogen cyanide gas is generated upon contact with moist air or acids. Dissolves in sodium cyanide, ammonium cyanide and potassium cyanide solutions to form copper-cyanide complexes. |
Main salt for cyanide copper plating in electroplating industry, used to supplement copper-ion content when bath condition drifts.
Fine-grained plating deposit Good throwing power of plating bath Direct plating on steel substrates Strong adhesion of coating Raw material for anti-tuberculosis drug synthesis in pharmaceutical industry. Used in antifouling coatings. |
Cuprous cyanide is highly toxic, with toxicity similar to hydrogen cyanide. Occupational exposure limit: 0.5 mg/m3. Chronic poisoning symptoms include headache and emaciation.
Store hermetically in dry and well-ventilated warehouse. Never store or transport together with acids. Take protective measures to prevent dust inhalation. Extinguish fire with sand; do not use water. |
